J ULLIETTE

Julliette Carignan

ARTIST'S RESUME

Julliette primarily paints realistic, painterly landscapes and portraits. Her work is characterized by strong draftsmanship and tonal values; solid three-dimensional forms; and thorough knowledge of anatomy and color. Much of her work is done on site, en plein air. Until recently, her medium was primarily oil paint, but she's been enjoying exploring watercolor lately too.

ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY

Julliette's representational painting is driven by her desire to express the excitement she feels when light strikes the landscape or other subject and infuses it with brilliant color and dynamic contrasts.

Since 1990, Julliette has been exhibiting in select and increasingly prestigious juried shows. In 2005, Julliette was invited to participate in the first Small Format Salon in Paris France, and in Belmont's new Gallery of Art’s Inaugural juried exhibition. She has frequently exhibited at that gallery since then. Her work was also featured in Concord Art Association’s Painter’s Invitational in 2000 and Plein Air Invitational in 1998. In 1997, her work was selected by the Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell for inclusion in the “Ten Women” exhibition of New England painters, and for the Harness Tracks of America prestigious national equine art exhibition in Lexington, Kentucky. In 1994, Julliette was offered a year’s Artist’s Residency in Plymouth. The paintings completed during her residency were exhibited in a solo show at Mingo Gallery in Beverly in 1994 and, along with new works, at the Marblehead Arts Association Gallery in 1995. She has participated in many other small group gallery shows and has been juried into a professional arts center’s studio. Her work is found in collections internationally.

Julliette received her Bachelor's Degree in Art from the University of Lowell (MA) in 1980. Since then, she has continued her artistic development through workshops, museum classes, and extensive personally-directed explorations. She was accepted into Scott Christensen's 10 day intensive workshop in 2007 and studied with Albert Handell in 2006. She has also studied with regionally and nationally known painters including George Nick, Bob Gerbracht, T.M. Nicholas, David Curtis, Michael Dowling, Charlotte Wharton, and, in France, with Adam Cope.

After studying art history in London in 1979, Julliette returned to Europe in 1990, where she spent three months drawing, studying art, and mountaineering. She has studied French and returned to France several times since, to prepare to paint on site in that country. She finally realized that dream in 2001 and again in 2004. The dozen paintings she completed during that first trip can be seen in the Europe Gallery. In 2007 she had the opportunity to paint in Italy for two weeks. She hopes to do longer painting excursions in Europe and in many other locations.

In parallel with her interest in art, Julliette has also long been an athletic enthusiast, dancing currently being her primary passion. She has also been active in yacht racing, skiing, tennis, boardsailing, bicycling and horsemanship. In quieter moments, she enjoys photography, digital imaging, web site development, the creation of photographic books, writing, reading, psychology, languages and music. In addition to her art degree, she holds a B.S. degree in Biology and an M.S. in Engineering.
